Do You Need Repiping Services?

Should you consider an upgrade to your old pipes? When they have reached the end of their useful life, they need to be replaced.

 Common reasons for repiping include:

  • The age of the home and the material of the pipes can contribute to the need for a replacement.
  • Corroding pipes, especially those producing discoloured water.
  • Leaky pipes can be a sign of a bigger problem.
  • If the water in your home starts to have a bad smell or taste.
  • Any visible signs of corrosion.

How Can You Tell If Your Plumbing System Needs Repiping?

How Much Does Repiping A House cost?

The cost of your home’s plumbing repairs is contingent on a variety of factors including whether you will need just to partially repipe, or do the whole house; what type of pipes you choose for replacement; and where they are accessible. How Long Does it Take to Repipe a House?

This will depend on the size of your house and how the plumbing was installed. On average, it will take one day for a 2-bathroom house and longer for a 3-bathroom or a two-story house. These types of houses may take a couple of days, depending on the size and structure as well as the accessibility of the pipes.

Is It Necessary To Repipe A House Every Few Years?

If your pipes are older than fifty years, they need to be inspected for replacement. If you experience decreased water pressure, discoloured, funny smelling or tinted water, this may be a sign your pipes need replacing. Depending on the material of your pipes, the lifespan will vary.

Signs It’s Time to Repipe Your House

Frequent Leaks and Pipe Bursts

Causes of Frequent Leaks and Bursts

Corrosion

Corroded pipes become brittle and crack over time, leading to leaks and bursts. The minerals in water can erode copper and galvanized steel pipes.

Freezing Temperatures

When water in pipes freezes and expands, it can rupture the pipes and cause flooding when thawed. Pipes in uninsulated exterior walls or attics are most at risk.

Ground Shifting

Shifts in the surrounding soil from drought conditions or tree roots can put stress on underground pipes and cause breaks.

High Water Pressure

Excess water pressure can stress pipes to the breaking point. Incoming home water pressure higher than 80 psi often leads to leaks.

Improper Installation

Mistakes during the original pipe installation, like improper joining of pipe sections, can make seams prone to future leakage.

Low Water Pressure

What Causes Loss of Water Pressure?

Mineral Buildup and Corrosion

Mineral deposits and corrosion create friction that restricts water flow through pipes. Water pressure drops as a result.

Partially Blocked Pipes

Buildup and debris cause partial blockages that reduce the pipe diameter. This obstruction limits water flow and decreases pressure.

Undersized Pipes

If the home’s supply pipes are too narrow for the required water volume, pressure loss occurs due to friction between the water and pipe walls.

Discolored or Smelly Water

Causes of Discolored Water

Rusty Pipes

Corroded galvanized and steel pipes can tinge water a red, brown, or yellowish color. Copper pipes also corrode, turning water blue-green.

Disturbed Pipes

Sediment that settled in old pipes gets stirred up when work is done on the plumbing, discoloring the water temporarily. This sediment should flush out over time.

Manganese and Iron

High levels of naturally occurring manganese and iron in well water can stain fixtures and clothing reddish-brown. Water softeners can filter out these minerals.

Causes of Foul Smelling Water

Bacteria Growth

Stagnant water in old pipes can develop bacteria like E. coli and sulphur-reducing bacteria, causing foul, sulfur-like odors.

Nearby Contaminants

Sewage, fertilizer, or industrial contaminants nearby can leach into compromised pipes, permeating the water with bad smells.

Chlorine Levels

A lack of chlorine in city water mains can allow organic material buildup that creates unpleasant odors when coming through the taps.

High Water Bills

How Leaky Pipes Increase Water Usage

Ongoing Slow Leaks

Small, hidden pinhole leaks allow water to constantly seep out undetected, running up the water bill over time.

Burst Pipes Flooding

Sudden, severe pipe bursts can flood areas of the home and release thousands of gallons in a short time, spiking water usage.

Inefficient Water Heaters

Leaking pipes force water heaters to work extra to compensate for lost heated water. This drives up electric or gas costs.

Running Toilets

Leaking toilet flappers allow water to continuously enter the toilet bowl, increasing water usage each month.

The Benefits of Repiping Your Home

Prevents Future Leaks & Damage

How New Pipes Prevent Leaks

No Corrosion

Modern pipes like PEX and CPVC are engineered not to corrode or erode over time like galvanized steel or copper.

Freeze Resistant

Some new pipe types like PEX are flexible and can withstand freezing and thawing cycles without rupturing. This prevents bursts.

Correct Sizing

New supply pipes are properly sized for the home’s water demand, eliminating strain and damage from excess pressure.

Improves Water Flow

How Repipes Improve Water Flow and Pressure

Wider Diameter

New pipes come in wider diameters than old 1/2″ galvanized steel, reducing friction for improved flow.

Smooth Interior

The smooth inner surface of new plastic and copper pipes allows water to flow freely without buildup obstruction.

Proper Alignment

Straight, properly aligned new pipes eliminate twists and bends that constrict flow in outdated plumbing.

Enhances Water Quality

How New Pipes Create Cleaner Water

No Corrosion

Non-reactive modern plastic pipes like PEX don’t corrode and leach metals into the water.

No Biofilm

The smooth interior of fresh piping doesn’t allow a breeding layer of bacteria (biofilm) like old pipes have.

Proper Filters

New treatment systems filter sediment and minerals for cleaner output water compared to unfiltered old pipes.

It also improves water quality and taste by removing contamination. Overall, repiping restores reliability to your home’s plumbing.

What are signs my Barrie home needs repiping?

There are several clear signs that indicate repiping is needed: frequent leaks or pipe bursts, low water pressure at taps and showers, rusty or discolored water, and strange odors coming from the pipes are strong clues your plumbing system needs pipe replacements. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely time to repipe.

How much does repiping a house cost in Barrie?

In Barrie, the average cost to repipe a house ranges from $4000-$8000 depending on size, pipe material, accessibility, and other factors. More bathrooms, finished walls, premium materials like copper, and difficult access increase costs. Get quotes from plumbers to estimate your specific project cost.

What pipe materials are best for repiping homes?

The top materials for repiping homes today are copper, PEX, and CPVC plastic piping. Copper is durable but expensive. Flexible PEX piping is affordable and easy to install. CPVC is a heat-resistant plastic that resists corrosion. A repiping expert can advise the optimal pipe type for your Barrie home.

How long does it take to repipe a house?

For a typical Barrie home, repiping usually takes 2-3 days start to finish. First day is removing old pipes, second day installing new piping, and third day for pressure testing and repairs. More complex jobs with finished walls or extensive pipe systems can take 5 days or longer.

Should I repipe my whole house or just problem areas?

It depends how widespread your plumbing issues are. For a few leaks or low pressure in one room, a partial repipe of the affected areas may suffice. But if problems exist throughout your whole plumbing system, like rusty water from corroded pipes, a full repipe is likely the best solution.

Is it better to repipe with PEX versus copper?

PEX and copper both make excellent water supply piping. PEX is more flexible, affordable, and easier to install. Copper withstands very high pressure. In most Barrie homes, PEX provides the better value for whole-house repiping. Consult with professional plumbers on which material suits your home.

Can I repipe the plumbing myself?

Repiping a home requires expertise in plumbing codes, connections, and testing for leaks. Unless you are very experienced with plumbing projects, it is wise to hire professional plumbers to ensure the job is done correctly. Mistakes made during a DIY repipe can lead to leaks and costly repairs down the road.

How disruptive is it to repipe a house?

Experienced plumbers use techniques to minimize disturbance to your home during a repipe. Access holes are strategically cut and repaired so walls/ceilings remain intact. Appliances are removed from walls to access pipes. Sections of the house have water shut off rather than the whole home. Overall, a professional team makes the process smooth.
